About

The census records of the Butler County Poor Farm are held in the genealogy department of the Butler County Public Library.  The records, dating from 1900 through the mid 1920s, contain a wealth of biographical information about the challenging lives of some of the county's most marginalized citizens.

In 2017 and 2019, students in Dr. Aaron Cowan's Digital History class at Slippery Rock University worked to digitize the large census registers, transcribe data from their pages, and research the history of the Butler County poor farm.

This site was launched in December 2019, to serve as a research resource for the public, and to share the history of the institution and the people who lived there.
